NAISS Medium call
The following resources are available in the NAISS Medium call, which is open 1 January – 31 December:
- Alvis – Accelerator-based resource dedicated to research using AI techniques
- Mimer – fast storage for data actively used on Alvis
- Bianca – A resource dedicated to research on sensitive data
- Swedish Science Cloud – An OpenStack cloud Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
- Dardel – General computational resource
- Klemming – fast storage for data actively used on Dardel
- Tetralith – General computational resource
- Centre Storage – fast storage for data actively used on Tetralith
NEW: NAISS has changed the proposal rounds structure. From 2026, we don’t offer separate compute, storage, and sensitive data rounds – only one type of Large (spring and fall), Medium and Small rounds, all with the possibility to apply for compute resources, storage resources, cloud resources and resources for sensitive data in the same proposal.
We recommend users to apply for all their needs in a single proposal. NAISS recognises that there may be special cases which might require more than one proposal, for example if an applicant has a need to handle both sensitive and non-sensitive data, but access to the sensitive data should be restricted to a subset of co-investigators. A request for any such exception should be clearly motivated in the proposals.
You should select the smallest call that your request can fit into.
Storage for active data only
You have to acknowledge that you will use NAISS storage resources for active data only. You have to continuously remove non-active data during the allocation period. In your data management plan you have to declare how you will handle your data after the allocation has ended.
Who is eligible to apply?
The Principal Investigator (PI) is responsible for the proposal and usage of any resources granted. You cannot be a PI for compute resources in a Medium and a Large project simultaneously.
You must be at least an assistant professor or academic research leader with full responsibility for the larger research project. You must hold an appointment of at least 60 percent at a Swedish university or research institution recognised by the Swedish Research Council, as NAISS is financed by Swedish tax payers with the objective to strengthen science and research in Sweden.
How to register a proposal
It is important that your proposal includes the intended usage and characteristics of the requested resources.
Register your proposal via the Swedish User and Project Repository (SUPR) website.
PIs with existing Compute and Storage allocations for the same research project should clone or continue their existing Compute project (NOT the Storage project) and then request both compute and storage in the new combined NAISS Medium proposal. On the Directory Name page of the combined proposal, you should select ‘Take over directory name “DIRECTORYNAME” from project NAISS YYYY/NN-NN’, where the project refers to your old storage project.
If you have previously been granted NAISS resources, you must upload activity reports for those projects to be eligible for new allocations.
Proposals are reviewed monthly throughout the year. Vacations and holidays may affect processing times. For detailed deadlines and decision dates, check the application round in SUPR.
PI information
Please review your personal information in SUPR and make sure that it is updated.
Project information
When registering a proposal in SUPR you have to provide the following information:
- Project title
- Affiliation – name of university/institute or similar
- Abstract – a scientific project abstract in English
- Resource usage – a motivation for the requested amount of resources and how they will be used
- Requested duration and start date
- Classification – according to Research Council classification codes
If you request more than the default amount of storage then you also have to file a
- Data management plan – a simplified abridged data management plan
If a resource for sensitive data is included in the proposal, we also need information regarding
- Sensitive data handling – information needed to comply with GDPR
